  • 450 g ground beef (no more than 7% fat)
  • 1 cup diced sweet pepper (red, green, yellow, or orange)
  • 0.5 cup chopped onion
  • 1 can (220 g) of tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cups of water
  • 0.5 cup dark or golden raisins

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 4 whole grain hamburger buns, cut in half
  • Fillings: sliced mango, sliced jalapeno, sliced tomato, chopped fresh cilantro, sliced green onions, grated cheddar

Preparation:

  1. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, bell pepper, and onion; cook for 8-10 minutes, breaking up any clumps of ground beef into 2-cm pieces and stirring occasionally. Drain off any fat.
  2. Add tomato sauce, water, raisins, ancho chili, and oregano; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15–18 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly, stirring occasionally.
  3. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the bottom half of each bun. Add any desired toppings and close the sandwiches.

    Note

Cooking times are based on fresh or well-defrosted ground beef. The internal temperature of the meat should be at least 160°F (70°C); don't rely solely on color.
