Kids Can Do It: Pizza-Flavored Popcorn

topcook.tomathouse.com

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (170 g) of tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp. l. grated parmesan
  • 1 tbsp. l. dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 0.5 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 3 cups popcorn
  • Special equipmentspice grinder

Preparation:

  1. Position the oven rack in the middle position and preheat to 95°C (205°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray generously with cooking spray. Spread the tomato paste in a thin layer on the parchment paper (a spatula works best for this).
  2. Bake until the paste is brick-red and dull, with no shiny spots, about 2 hours. The tomato paste will resemble fruit marshmallows. Let cool. Tear the paste into small pieces and grind in batches in a spice grinder.
  3. Add all the ground tomato paste back to the spice grinder along with the Parmesan, oregano, garlic salt and pepper and grind until a fine powder is formed. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. The spice mix makes enough for 6 batches of popcorn..
  4. To make one serving of pizza-flavored popcorn, heat 1/2 tbsp olive oil or other vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Add 1/2 cup popcorn; when one kernel pops, cover the pan with a lid and cook, shaking the pan constantly, until the popping rate slows to one pop every 20 seconds. Add a little melted butter and 2 tablespoons pizza spice mix and stir.
